Labor Education Foundation Newsletter -
July 2001
The Labor Education Foundation (LEF) would like to bring you up to date on our progress
since our last letter.
Movie “Wall Street”
On November 18, 2000 the LEF did a showing of
the movie “Wall Street” followed by a panel discussion of the
movie. Our goal was to have
between 25 and 35 people to attend. We
had 28 people in attendance. Equally
as important was the new faces and the young adults in attendance. We all felt the movie/panel format worked very well and we hope to
use it with other films in the future. The special LCD projector, DVD player
and the sound system worked very well.
Meeting Minutes
Our last business meeting was held on November 20, 2000 at the Boonville Public Library.
Donnie Walker made a presentation concerning the cost of creating the web page for the foundation.
The remaining cost of the Wall Street Movie event was covered by donations from
Gary Fritz and Margie Skelton with other directors buying the remaining supplies.
Even though the Evansville Courier printed a retraction about who was sponsoring the
Wall Street Movie all those present agreed that there was little we could have done to prevent the error.
Several new books, videos and audio materials were to be added to the Boonville collection. Most of these were donated.
The group agreed to purchase more children's books about labor unions in the future.
Plans were discussed about attempting another event in February or March 2001.
The finial copies of the By-Laws were passed out. A copy is attached.
Plans were made to approach the Princeton, Evansville and Oakland City Public Libraries about starting labor collections at those sites.
Next meeting will be held on September 6, 2001 at 6:30 PM at the Boonville Public Library.
Labor Day Event
After the success of the performance of Karen
Vuranch as Mother Jones during the 2000 Labor Day Weekend, we
have entered into an arrangement with the Labor Day Association to
bring Gene Worthington to the Celebration to perform John L Lewis.
He will perform after UMWA International President Cecil Roberts who
will be speaking on Labor Day at 2:00 PM at the Gibson County
Fairground in Princeton, IN. Check
out the Labor Day Association web page labordayassoc.com.
Reception for Gene Worthington
Gene will give a preview of his John L Lewis
performance on September 1, 2001 at 7:00 PM at the Home Economics
Building at the Gibson County Fairgrounds. This is your chance to meet and talk to the
actor Gene Worthington.
Find out why he chose John L. Lewis as his character.
Did You Know?
Did you know that most pension plans and medical coverage for workers worldwide could be credited to
John L. Lewis. He established these benefits for coal miners in the 1940s.
Annoucement
The LEF is pleased to announce the opening of a Labor Collection of books and other materials at the
Princeton Public Library in Princeton, IN. If all goes well the dedication will take place over the
Labor Day weekend. More information will be available in our next newsletter.
Web Page Coming Soon
Our domain name is laboreducation.com. It will be up
and running before Labor Day. Our
plans are to share a home page with the Labor Day Association. This way both groups will gain exposure from people accessing
the other’s site. The reason that the site has been delayed is the need to
finish the database of materials in the Boonville Collection. This has
taken more time and effort than we expected.
Recomendation
“Mother Jones: The Most Dangerous Woman in America”
is the title of a new book written by Elliott J. Gorn.
Mr. Gorn is a professor of History at Purdue
University. The book is in
bookstores now and will be available at the Boonville Public Library
in the next few weeks.
